In the English seaside town of Thornsea, Ruth Barrett runs a chain of sports bars with her husband Mike. After 24 years of marriage she's happy, thinking this is the only life she'll ever know. Then she's convinced she's about to die.
If you had another chance at life, which one would you choose?
I started writing Compassion-on-Sea in June 2022. In 2017, I spent five weeks in hospital. A couple of months later, I learned a friend I'd made there had ended her life. How that happened, and how it might have been prevented, haunted me.
I felt I needed to do something. I wanted to offer hope to people going through difficulties and offer insights for those trying to help them.
When I've spoken about my own personal experience many people have said, 'You should write a book'.To make this a reality, I've spent years researching, studying and listening to other people's stories. The result is an optimistic novel about friendship, community, our mental health system, relationships, new beginnings and what happens when we find compassion.
